The Family Report
Destined to be a food critic....my son gives us the 9 - year - old perspective on new foods he’s trying.
“I’m so glad we are doing gluten-free, because we get to try all these new yummy foods we never would have tried”
These words give me encouragement on
days that he is not so happy with food restrictions, or I’m scrambling to come up
with a new lunch at 8 am on a school day.
Brand: Daiya Cheese
Product: Gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free shredded cheese! Mozzarella and cheddar cheese flavors
Critique: “This cheese tastes great, tastes (almost) like cheese and melts! I am very excited to try it on pizza, tacos, even grilled cheese!” (my parent critique)
I bought this in Wild By Nature, East Setauket, in the refrigerated cheese section
Brand: Glutino
Product: Gluten Free Pizza, Spinach and Feta . Individual pizza.
Critique: “This is GREAT!! Its the best pizza I ever tasted. Really it is. Its a little spinachy at first, but then I got used to it”
My son ate this up quickly. Wish it were larger.
I bought this in Wild By Nature, East Setauket
Brand: Amy’s Kitchen
Product: Cheese Pizza Rice Crust
Critique: “Mmmmm. Its like regular pizza but a little more better.”
We devoured this within 10 minutes. Buy more than one. I bought this in Wild By Nature, East Setauket
Brand: Barbara’s
Product: Puffins Cereal - honey rice flavor
Critique: “Mommy you have to put this on the website. Its so good. Its the best cereal I ever tasted.”
This is a sweet rice cereal - the squares reminded me of Chex. (which are also gluten free) He loves this cereal.
Brand: Gluten-Free Pantry
Product: Brown-rice Pancake and
Waffle Mix.
Critique: “They are very good but very filling.”
The pancake mix is out of the box, calls for 1 egg, oil
(I used flaxseed oil) and milk (I used rice milk)
Brand: Kinnikinnick
Product: Pancake and Waffle Mix.
Critique: “The better ones.”
This mix was recommended by a friend and we all enjoyed the taste and consistency a bit more than the Gluten-Free Pantry mix.
Brand: Bionaturae
Product: Organic Gluten Free Spaghetti
Critique: “It was really good, it tasted really good with the sauce.”
(My gluten-full husband also really liked the taste. Enough to ask: “is this really gluten-free too?” It gets extra points for that.)
This pasta is made from rice, potato and soy and has a nicer consistency than some of the rice pastas.
We’’ve always enjoyed Bionaturae brand pastas.
Brand: Glutino
Product: Gluten Free Honey Nut Cereal
Critique: “They taste like animal crackers.
Aren’t these a “treat” cereal?”
(thats what I call cereals that I think are really dessert.)
I like this cereal too. It has a pleasant taste, but is sweet. I bought this in Wild By Nature, East Setauket
Brand: Glutino
Product: Gluten Free Breadsticks
Critique: “They were really good! They taste like pizza crusts”
(My son loved them and devoured a whole bag one evening and then wanted them for breakfast the next day)
Brand: Foods by George
Product: English Muffins
Critique: “It was good”
(My husband was the one who loved these muffins. He put them in the microwave for 30 seconds, then put them in the toaster oven to heat up. He had it with jelly, and my son had almond butter and jelly. The muffins were soft.)
We had them again and used them as buns for the turkey burgers. They are good.
I found these in the freezer section at St. James Natural Foods.
Brand: Glutino
Product: English Muffins
Critique: “It was terrible”
(I’m the one who critiqued these. I couldn’t eat them and I didn’t even try to give them to my son. Terrible.)
I found these in the freezer section at Wild By Nature.
Brand: Garguilo’s Bakery, St. James, NY
Product: White bread loaf, pre-sliced.
Critique: “The best bread”
My son has been requesting this bread solely for lunches and any sandwiches we make at home. It really does taste great. Its freshly baked Mondays at Garguilos, $7.50 a loaf, freezable.
Ingredients include: white rice flour, tapioca flour, sugar, xanthum gum, milk powder, salt, yeast, butter, vinegar, water.
