New Try of the Week

Gluten Free breads by Against the Grain, the gluten free Gourmet,
are SO good. We have tried the rosemary rolls (photo, right), italian bread
and sesame bagels. All are excellent. They are in the frozen section at
Wild By Nature.

DeBoles Gluten Free Rice Angel Hair Pasta. The taste was disappointing.
I much prefer Bionaturae and Glutino brand spaghetti.

I’m always looking for good gluten-free rice mixes, so when I saw that Lundberg

has a series of gluten-free Risotto mixes I was hopeful. We tried the Italian Herb

flavor. It started out tasting pretty good, but got ‘gloppy’ (for lack of a better word.)

End result, not so good.

A friend recommended Kinnikinnick Foods Donuts. We’ve tried the Vanilla Glazed flavor. They are gluten free - wheat free - dairy free - soy free. They are DELICIOUS. They are expensive, and well worth it. They are in the frozen section at Wild By Nature. $6 and change.

I found a cute 2-cookie package of Enjoy Life “snickerdoodle” cookies, while shopping in Stop & Shop, ‘natural aisle’, 25A East Setauket, when my son was ‘starving’ and needed a snack. They are nut and gluten free, not too sweet, and really very good. We both liked them. They make their products in a dedicated nut and gluten-free bakery.  I will look for more of their products.

We had Sun Flour Baking Company’s “Noatmeal  Raisin” cookies. - they are very tasty, different, and made with pinto bean flour. They come individually wrapped. A friend recommended them and found them at Wild By Nature for $4.49

We have tried Sensible Foods 100% Organic Cherry Berry - Crunch Dried Snacks - Cherry, Blueberry, Strawberry, Apple - as a lunch snack for school. My son loved this flavor.

I used Premiere Japan Biologique Wheat-Free Teriyaki Sauce as a marinade with broiled salmon for dinner.  It was very tasty, but the sauce is a little spicy, which some like, some don’t.

In looking for bread alternatives, I’ve tried to find good wraps. The first we tried was a brown rice wrap, which fell apart and was hard and chewy. For Father’s Day Taco Night, we tried Whole Spelt Tortilla wraps from Rudi’s Organic Bakery, made with 100% organic whole spelt flour. While this has spelt gluten, it is believed to be easier to digest by those sensitive to gluten in wheat. The wraps tasted good and held together well.

Amy’s Kitchen, which has many frozen food products we have enjoyed in the past, recently came out with a gluten-free Rice Mac and Cheese. Its the same cheese but with rice pasta. My son brought it for school lunch and loved it.

When I looked on Amy’s site, I found many other gluten-free products including a Cheese Pizza with Rice Crust. My son has really been missing pizza so I was excited to find it at Wild By Nature. (frozen section, hard to see at first). Very good - we both enjoyed it. I will bring this for him to parties as a substitute for ‘regular’ pizza.

He also tried the spinach with soy cheese pie, also with rice crust, and this is his favorite. He likes the spices in this pizza.

We tried Ener-g High Fiber Loaf  bread -it is gluten free, wheat free, dairy free.

The bread has a fuller taste than some of the others, but it does have that ‘spongy’ quality.
I don’t think I’ll buy it again soon.

Last week we tried Pamela’s Chocolate Brownie Mix - highly recommended by a friend and restaurant owner.  (The Golden Pear Café, Stony Brook, NY)

These brownies were so good - we didn’t tell the children anything about gluten-free. My friend Liz described it as a ‘brownie tornado’ when the gang came in and devoured them. I would say Pamela’s
gets 5 stars.

This month’s new products:

Annie Naturals Ketchup and Salad Dressings are excellent and gluten free.
(read the label for each dressing, not all say gluten free)

Also, Italian breadsticks by Schär - individually wrapped packs, 3 bunches of thin, crunchy breadsticks come in a package. Good for a change and good for school lunches, mixed with turkey, cheese, salami, etc. (I found these at Wild By Nature in the Gluten-Free aisle.)

Kettle Cuisine All Natural, Gluten-Free and some Dairy-Free, frozen soups and beef chili products. We’ve tried the beef chili, the carrot ginger soup and the chicken noodle soup. All delicious. Its in a one-bowl serving, heatable in the microwave. These are excellent tasting products with a good story on the back.
(I found these at Wild By Nature in the Gluten-Free frozen section.)

Brownies by Foods By George. Gluten-free, dairy-free, do contain eggs. Very good brownies - soft, moist, chewy, chocolatey, not too sweet.
(I found these at St. James Natural in the frozen section.)

Crackers by Glutano. Gluten-free, dairy-free, egg free, casein free. We’ve heard they are good and will try them this week.
(I found these at St. James Natural, on sale this week, 3/31/09.)

Glutino Gluten Free Pizza, Spinach and Feta.
Gluten-free individual pizza. Very good! My son loves it.
(I found these at Wild By Nature, in the freezer section.)

We’ve tried some new products recently. All worth mentioning!

Miguel’s Organic Everything Tortilla Dippers
Gluten-free tortilla chips. Excellent, different.
They have a few flavors
(I found these at Wild By Nature, near the deli counter.)

Imagine Natural Creations
Creamy Broccolli Soup, Corn & Lemongrass Soup
They have a variety of soups, gluten-free and dairy-free. The creamy broccolli is creamy, without using dairy. A nice alternative.
(I found these at Wild By Nature, in the soup aisle.)

Larabar - The Original Fruit & Nut Food Bar
My friend recently turned me on to these. They are very tasty. Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Soy-free, No added sugar, Unprocessed, Vegan, Kosher, Non-GMO....what more could we ask?

They are great for carrying with you if you need a quick protein snack. I’ve seen 3 different flavors: cherry pie, apple pie, cashew cookie. All good. My son likes them too!

(These are in Stop & Shop and Wild By Nature)

Pound Cake Minis - New Harvest Natural GF Bakery
These come in regular pound cake, raisin, and marble. They are individually wrapped. Great for a lunch box or trip. Tasty.

(These are in Wild By Nature on the table near the bakery)

Old Wisconsin - Snack Bites, Beef Sausage
Marked gluten free on the label. They are a little like beef jerky.

They are different, and I used them as part of a lunch with turkey, crackers, and cheese.

(These are in Stop & Shop in a stand, near the cheese counters)

Garrett County Chicken Bites
Gluten-free Dinosaur-Shaped Chicken ‘Nuggets’
These are very tasty and children like them. I keep them frozen and use for school lunches.
(I found these at Wild By Nature, in the meat dept..)

Caesar’s Potato Gnocchi
Gluten-free Gnocchi!
It has been a long time since I’d had gnocchi! These were bland and pleasant enough. They did not reheat so well. But they were very tasty in a gnocchi - salmon - roasted asparagus dish i made using a garlic-oil sauce.
(I found these at Whole Foods in the frozen section.)

Lundberg’s Brown Rice Couscous
Gluten-free Couscous
This couscous works very well in place of ‘regular’ couscous.
(I found this at Wild By Nature.)

Bearito Taco Seasoning
Gluten-free taco seasoning
This is a good taco seasoning packet I have used often.
(I found this at Wild By Nature)

Amy’s Burrito - Gluten Free, Non-Dairy
My son and I tried a few flavors of these. He really liked them. I thought they got a bit mushy in the microwave, but they had a good taste.
(I found this at Wild By Nature and Stop and Shop)

Notta Pasta - Rice Spaghetti
I used this when making a thai flavored dish. They worked well. They were a bit more sticky than other rice noodles, they were soft and enjoyable.
(I found this at Stop and Shop)

Daiya Cheese
Gluten-Free, dairy-free, soy-free shredded cheese.

It tastes good and it melts!
(I found these at Wild By Nature, in the refrigerated meats area.)

Greens+ 22 days ‘Nut Butter Buddha Crunch’ Protein Bar
Gluten-Free, dairy-free AND soy-free protein bar.

This is the best tasting protein bar I have tried and finding the gf-df-sf combination is challenging. They have a few different flavors, this was my favorite.
(I found these at Wild By Nature and St. James Nutrition)

Feel Good Foods Pan Fried Dumplings
Gluten-Free dumplings. Chicken, Pork and Shrimp.

I have been looking for these for quite sometime in my neighborhood, and finally saw them at Wild By Nature. I really miss chinese dumplings! When I first cooked these, though following instructions, the dumpling came out too mushy. I will try again because I want to like them!
(I found these at Wild By Nature, in the refrigerated area.)

Aunt Gussie’s Gluten-Free Cookies
Gluten-Free, dairy-free, vegan, chocolate chip cookies.

My friend’s new favorite cookie. She is a big Pamela’s cookies fan. Crunchy.
(Stop and Shop, East Setauket)

Nature’s Hilights Pizza Crust
Gluten-Free, dairy-free, soy-free, egg-free Pizza Crust

This crust is made solely from brown rice. It is a good alternative for those with multiple food restrictions. I liked it, though Udi’s is still my favorite (which contain eggs). It was light, thin and not too chewy (as brown rice wraps can sometimes be) 2 large circle crusts come in a box.
(I found these at Wild By Nature, in the frozen pizza area.)
